Welcome...

...to the Thurston Community College Contemporary British Cinema blog. Here you will find useful links and posts relating to the topic which is part of the broader OCR Media Studies Unit 2735 - Media Issues and Debates.

As the title of the unit suggests the best way to do well in this exam is to have a fair grasp of a range of issues and debates surrounding Contemporary British Cinema. In order to do this you need to read widely, view lots of films, think critically, show personal engagement and debate the issues. Remember, this is a synoptic unit so it draws on ALL of the Media Studies Key Concepts.

Posting your own ideas to this blog is an excellent way of engaging with the issues and developing and forming your own opinions. So get clicking and post your comments; or I'll set Don Logan on you!

Much of the Eye Weekly review is based around Kingsley's performance. Meanwhile the only Oscar nomination that Sexy Beast received was for Best Supporting Actor (Ben Kingsley). Sexy Beast is clearly a successful British film, but to what extent is Ben Kingsley alone the reason for this?

You tell me Mr. X; or should I call you Bussman?
Most reviews give great praise to Sir Ben's chilling performance of the loathsome Don - is this deserved? What about some of the other roles? Ian McShane was brilliant as Teddy - all brooding menace and underplayed to perfection.

I do believe that Ben Kingsley's critical acclaim was deserved. It was a brilliant performance. Ian McShane was also outstanding. I also think there were aspects of Glazer's directing that were excellent.

Updating your 'brilliant' with other adjectives eh? I see all. Mwa ha ha. I have added Blackball to my Lovefilm list; directed by Mel Smith I see. It better be good...

Actually it was a spelling correction for the word 'acclaim.' Your 'seeing all' has been foiled!

I think that Ben Kinglsey was brilliant in this film, but I think a lot of the credit should also go to 'Gal', who must have had a hard time shaking off his hard man image to play such a good willed character. Well done to him.
